What is Biodynamics?

More than gardening. A way of seeing life.

Biodynamics is an approach to gardening and farming that treats soil, plants, and people as part of one living whole. Instead of focusing only on feeding plants, biodynamics asks us to care for the life beneath our feet — the soil — so that nourishment flows upward into our food, our homes, and our lives.

The Roots of Biodynamics

In 1924, a group of European farmers, worried about the decline in their crops and soil, turned to philosopher Rudolf Steiner for guidance. His Agriculture Course became the foundation of what we now call biodynamics — the first movement to see soil as a living organism and farming as a practice connected to the wider rhythms of nature.

How it Works

Biodynamics begins with a simple truth: soil is alive.

  • Living Soil: Healthy soil is full of microbes, fungi, and minerals that nourish plants naturally.

  • Seasonal Rhythms: Just as our bodies change with the seasons, so does the earth. Biodynamics aligns planting, tending, and harvesting with these natural rhythms.

  • Preparations: Special blends of herbs, minerals, and natural materials are added to the soil to enliven it and help plants grow with resilience.

Why it Matters

Biodynamics restores vitality to the earth — and the benefits ripple through everything it touches:

  • For the Soil: Biodynamic practices increase soil organic matter and microbial life, which improves fertility, water retention, and resilience against drought.

  • For the Plants: Studies have found that biodynamically grown crops often show stronger root systems, higher resistance to pests, and greater vitality.

  • For Nutrition: Biodynamic fruits, grains, and vegetables often contain higher levels of antioxidants, polyphenols, and certain vitamins than organic produce — a reflection of the deeper soil vitality they’re grown in.

  • For the Earth: By avoiding synthetic chemicals and working with natural rhythms, biodynamics helps restore biodiversity, sequester carbon in the soil, and heal the ecosystem.

  • For Us: The result is food that tastes more vibrant, nourishes more deeply, and connects us back to the source of our wellbeing — the living soil beneath our feet.

Modern Biodynamics at Harmonic Humus

Traditional biodynamics was built for large farms and often relied on animal inputs. At Harmonic Humus, we’ve carried forward the wisdom of biodynamics in a way that is accessible, plant-based, and made for everyday gardens.

Modern Biodynamics for Everyday Gardens.

It’s simple. It’s practical. And it’s a way back to nourishment.
